Khashoggi killing an iniquitous act

-

THE editorial (ODT, 18.10.18) was very apt, pointing out the active role of some of the world powers in silencing their critics within and outside their own countries.

The recent alleged killing of Jamal Khashoggi, the dissident Saudi journalist, is an appalling and iniquitous act; noone seems to deny that Saudi Arabia had a part in it.

It is the moral duty of New Zealand to condemn this barbaric act; or are we waiting for US to do that first?

We seem to take a different public stance when dealing with Saudi Arabia, be it their contemptible treatment of women or genocide in Yemen.

New Zealand even supported them to chair the United Nations Human Rights Council in the recent past.

Successive New Zealand governments, be it left, centre or right leaning, seem to sacrifice our moral high ground for a few Saudi riyals. Mathew Zacharias

PRESIDENT Donald Trump must really want to get on the wrong side of the Republican Party with the Jamal Khashoggi case.

It’s one thing to make the US kiss up to Putin but to Muslims wearing Arabian garb?

That’s really going to stick in their craw.

Is Trump trying to get the boot? Is he wanting out? Will he defect to North Korea?

What a crazy show this is!

What is his big ending, I wonder? Who writes this reality bending saga?

It’s almost its own industry now. Aaron Nicholson
