Cat looking up a kilt was ‘great photojournalism’

-

I MUST congratulate all concerned with the publication of the wonderful photograph of piper Bill Swift’s cat Pantha, who was in the process of adding to his knowledge about what is worn underneath a kilt, or perhaps confirming his worst suspicions (ODT, 24.10.18).

The essence of great photojournalism has always been to tell a complete story by means of a single image which did not call for verbal explanation. This wonderful photograph comes very close to achieving that ideal, while causing, no doubt, many a chuckle, titillating the senses of some and, for others perhaps, laying a legend to rest.

Only a rather notorious photograph taken by a photographer during the 1950s of a veteran piper relaxing in the stands between ‘‘gigs’’ at a pipe band contest expressed the essence of ‘‘the true Scot’’ better — and then only marginally. Ian Smith

Kurow Museum

FURTHER to Margaret Hall’s letter (ODT, 18.9.18) regarding New Zealand’s social welfare scheme, the Kurow Museum is called the Social Security Museum of New Zealand.

We have a permanent display featuring the ‘‘Three Wise Men’’ and the origins of our social welfare. The book, Four Shillings and Threepence, written by local historian Jon Brocas, gives excellent and detailed information. This is available at the Kurow Museum and Information Centre.

The plaque outside the doctor’s house was instigated by the late Bob Watherston, a stalwart member of the Kurow Museum committee for many years.

The funds for this were raised by the museum committee.

Another museum project has been to restore, in Kurow, a singleman’s hut from the Waitaki Dam village, where the scheme began. Visitors and inquiries are always welcome.

NZ bullying problem

NO wonder we have a problem with bullying in our schools, education system and the workplace.

That is certainly the case when the youth of today are exposed to the kind of tactics that the National Party has employed to discredit JamiLee Ross, just to make their leader look great in the media.

But it’s not working — Mr Bridges is performing like a trained seal and Crusher Collins will be after his job in the very near future.
