SENTENCES imposed by Judge Michael Crosbie in the Dunedin District Court yesterday and Thursday were. — Shane Smith (37), employed, of Dunedin, drinkdriving, 755mcg (in John Wilson Ocean Dr, following another vehicle, crashed into back of it when it stopped near Forbury Rd roundabout; said he was picking up his flatmate, knew he should not have been driving), about 1am, September 15, 150 hours’ community work, disqualified nine months. Second drinkdrive conviction, first in 2007, court heard.
Gopala Michael James Lyon (30), joiner, of Dunedin, drinkdriving, 722mcg (riding motorbike, stopped by passing police patrol, said he was riding the bike for fun after having a few drinks at home), Neill St, about 1.10am, September 23, 150 hours’ community work, disqualified nine months. One previous drinkdrive conviction seven years ago, judge told.
Alanette Judy Charmaine Burke (23), employed, of Dunedin, drinkdriving, 715mcg (random stop; said she just wanted to get home), Glen Rd, about 4.25am, September 8, fined $700, court costs $130, disqualified six months.
Michael Keith Gillon (66), retired, of Mosgiel, drinkdriving, 600mcg (seen leaving hotel, admitted having consumed four buckets of beer, smaller than normal jugs, judge said), Factory Rd, Mosgiel, June 13, four months’ community detention (curfewed 8pm to 7am daily), court costs $130, disqualified one year. Gillon had three previous drinkdrive convictions — in 1991, 1996 and 2003).
Kieran John Fowler (29), sales manager, of Dunedin, drinkdriving, 551mcg, and careless driving (crashed into vehicle parked on side of road; said he had been looking at his phone and swerved to miss a cat; said he had had five glasses of beer before driving), Taieri Rd, about 8.20pm, August 28, for drinkdriving fined $500, court costs $130, disqualified eight months; careless driving, reparation $8982, disqualified eight months (concurrent). Counsel Andy Belcher said Fowler ‘‘will make reparation in full today’’; restorative justice did not occur but Fowler had been eager to attend; he had no previous convictions.
Ryan James Ronald Burgess (18), employed, of Mosgiel, drinkdriving aged under 20, 214mcg, Gowland St, about 11pm, October 5, fined $400, court costs $130, disqualified three months.
Trevor James Morey (38), engineer, of Karitane, aggravated driving while disqualified (fourth such conviction; Morey’s partner was originally driving the vehicle south to Dunedin, struggled with the glare, Morey took over the driving; defence counsel Jo Turner said her client had been a regular before the court in the past but was much improved after undergoing counselling), April 16, WaikouaitiWaitati road, six months’ community detention, 15 months’ intensive supervision, 15 months’ disqualification. Jacob Cole Percey (18), of Dunedin, breaching intensive supervision (failed to report to probation as directed), between August 14 and 28, sentence deferred nine months.
Chantelle Denise McKnight (31), of Timaru, possessing methamphetamine (small amount), possessing LSD (small amount), possessing cannabis oil (in small clip seal bag), possessing cannabis (4.15g), possessing cannabis utensil (grinder), Dunedin, August 1, nine months’ supervision. No previous convictions, court heard. Logan Dean Grace (45), of Dunedin, intentionally damaging cellphone, Tuesday, nine months’ supervision.
