Offers of help show Kiwi spirit still alive and well
ON Saturday, October 27, my car broke down on the Katiki Straight at 10.30pm. I rang the AA, who said they would send a tow truck. It didn’t arrive until 1.30am.
In those three hours at least 30 people stopped to ask whether I was OK; truck drivers, couples, a group of older ladies who offered to stay until help came, and a young girl on her own.
It made me proud to be a New Zealander.
In many countries now days many people won’t stop at night.
It may be a decoy or trap.
Or people are warned that they may face public liability issues.
I finally got home at 2am, after friends from Hampden had stopped and then came back to make sure I was still all right.
I would like to sincerely thank all those who stopped. I never had a chance to feel lonely or afraid.
You all showed true Kiwi spirit in action.
Thank you so much. Ken Bridge
