CLUBBING IT

-

There was a lot of correspondence this week in regards to Rhys Bayly’s terrific oneday knock of 180 for Kaikorai a few weeks back. We wondered whether it may have been a tournament record until Green Island stalwart Jeremy Scott reminded us of Hamish Rutherford’s stunning innings of 184 for Green Island in 201011.

But former Otago and Kaikorai cricketer Lance Pearson phoned in with news of an even more remarkable innings. He had been going through his memorabilia and came across a newspaper clipping from 1966.

He played in what he recalls as the first oneday club game in the city and scored 203 not out against Dunedin. Former New Zealand mediumpacer Frank Cameron was in the attack that day. Cameron took 1133 wickets for the club, 447 firstclass wickets and 62 test wickets for his country.

But as Pearson dryly put it, ‘‘He had a bad day that day’’.
