Star Wars revellers find the froth is with them

- JONO EDWARDS

THE froth was with them as a group of Star Warsthemed beer enthusiasts explored the Dunedin Craft Beer and Food Festival at the weekend.

A group of Wookies and Storm Troopers, all part of a work social club, abandoned their regular cantina to sip brews among thousands of others at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.

While three of the revellers were happy to be photographed, their Chewbacca friend decided it would be better to be in a place far, far away from the limelight.

The weather started off cold, but as the clouds cleared, Sarah Moulton admitted she was ‘‘getting a bit hot’’ inside her homemade Ewok costume.

They were among 6200 thirsty beer enthusiasts sampling brews from Dunedin and beyond at the Otago University Students’ Association event.

The festival, in its sixth year, had 90 stallholders offering more than 400 varieties of beer, cider, wine and spirits, as well as plenty of food.

Dunedin Craft Beer and Food Festival event manager Jason Schroeder said the crowd enjoyed themselves and the weather turned out to be ‘‘amazing’’.

The festival looked as good as it ever had, he said.

‘‘I think vendors this year put more thought into how they’ve dressed their sites, so the layout is really good.’’

There were no door sales as tickets sold out within three minutes. Overall, behaviour was good.

‘‘No real dramas. There are always a few people who push the boat out a little far and we’ll have to look after, but in general we’re really happy.’’

Drinkers were entertained by musical talent at the event, including headliners Bic Runga and Elemeno P.

Other attractions included a silent disco, garden games, an Otago Museum children’s zone, Otago Polytechnic seminars as well as whisky and wine tasting.
