Unicorns rule top Xmas toy list

- JONO EDWARDS

MADDIE Johnston loves everything unicorn.

And the Dunedin girl is clearly not alone, as pink, glittery mythical creatures take out two places in the Warehouse’s top Christmas toys list this year.

Maddie has a unicorn money box, unicorn plush toys, unicorn pillow and ‘‘a lot of other stuff’’.

She hoped to add to that haul this year.

However, her eyes were also fixed solidly on small wideeyed figurines known as LOL Dolls.

‘‘I don’t know if they’re popular at my school. I think it’s just me.’’

The Warehouse’s top toy list would beg to differ, as they

were expected to be among the top 10 most soughtafter children’s presents.

Warehouse toys buying manager Lonnica van Engelen said best sellers for 2018 were Zuru Rainbocorns, Kiwi Scrabble, Hot Wheels, Lego and Barbie, and a revamped Polly Pocket.

Also on the list was Poopsie the Surprise Unicorn which, as it sounds, is a unicorn that poos glittery slime.

Rainbocorns would be this year’s ‘‘it’’ toy, but LOL Dolls were not going anywhere in a hurry.

‘‘A big trend in toys right now is the opportunity to unbox and reveal different characters and accessories and build up a collection.

‘‘You don’t know what you’re going to get and kids love the surprise factor.’’

Board games also made a resurgence in recent years.

‘‘We are seeing new and localised instalments on old classics. . . which are attracting new generations to play.’’ — Additional reporting RNZ
