Summer roadworks begin; NZTA warns of delays

- STAFF REPORTER

SUMMER roadworks have started on highways in Central Otago and the Queenstown Lakes district.

NZ Transport Agency lower South Island journey manager Peter Brown said resurfacing work in Frankton Rd, which began in October, was expected to finish in midDecember.

During the night works delays of up to 10 minutes could be expected for motorists.

There were also many reseal sites throughout the Central Lakes area but most roadworks would not have a significant impact on people’s journeys.

Mr Brown said information on the locations and timing of sites which would cause delays would be published on the NZTA’s traffic information website.

Next year attention would turn to improving State Highway 6, near the Crown Range turnoff.

That work was scheduled for between early January and the end of March.

Mr Brown said motorists should allow extra time when travelling and check the agency’s website, social media and electronic messaging signs for information.

He advised drivers to slow down to the temporary speed limit before they reached the new chipseal and allow an extra car’s length distance between the vehicle in front.

Motorists should also drive steadily at the temporary speed limit, avoid braking and be patient.

‘‘The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience that summer roadworks may cause and ask that you travel through the work areas at the temporary speed limits for your own safety and the safety of our roading crews,’’ he said.
