New first wicket club record set in huge Union win

The Union opening pair of Jeremiah Shield (117) and Sam Bastin (81) set a Union club record against Albion at King George Park on Saturday.

Shield and Bastin’s firstwicke­t stand of 214 runs surpassed the previous best of 212 runs, set in 2015 by Duncan Drew and Glynn Cameron.

Sean Conlan hit out lustily for his unbeaten 63 and Thomas Shields was unbeaten on 29 when the Union innings closed at 320 for two after 50 overs.

Levi Ewing (one for 38) and Ricky Whyte (one for 54) were the successful Albion bowlers.

Albion, needing 321 to win in 50 overs, collapsed to be all out at 131 in the 31st over. Jayden Strackbrid­ge led the way, with 39 runs backed up by 19 from Jonty Naylor. Dave Martin took three for four off his three overs, and Blake James chimed in with two for 21.

The Waitaki Boys’ High School first XI defeated Valley at the Weston Domain by 101 runs. Batting first, Waitaki Boys’ made 209 with player/coach Francois Mostert playing a fine hand for 107. Jack Price added 27.

Bowling for Valley, Cameron Grubb took three for 21 and Tom Harding three for 22.

Valley was dismissed for 98 in the 24th over, with Dallas Mahuika top scoring with 38, while with the ball for Waitaki Boys’ the wickets were shared between Ben Mavor, who took seven for 53, and Glen McLea, who took three for 18.

The fifth round of Mills Shield bowls was played on Saturday morning. At the Awamoa club, Maheno’s Allan Holmes beat John Friend (Awamoa C) 1913, Tony Hill of Hampden defeated Brian Trembath of Kurow 2711, Peter Bell of Awamoa B beat Meadowbank’s Noel Read, 2114, and Mike Mols downed Chris Poole of Meadowbank C, 1914.

Three games were played at the Phoenix club. John Priddle beat Bill Behrens (both Phoenix) 1713, Brett Cairns of Meadowbank defeated Dick Cleland of Phoenix 2012 and Brian Cameron of Meadowbank beat Phoenix’s Merv Roper, 1611.
