Breen team takes title

- TERRY O’NEILL

DOROTHY Breen’s trio of

Carol Read (second) and Ngaira Hooper (lead) came through unbeaten in the North Otago Centre’s women’s triples at the Meadowbank club on Saturday, defeating Kurow’s trio of Pat Robinson (skip), Ann Trembath (second) and Ngaire Sinclair (lead).

The trio won 103.

Breen led her team through to the finals with an unbeaten record, and the victory gave Breen her 12th centre title. Read took her ninth centre title, one away from her second gold star, while Ngaira Hooper won her first gold star.

Breen came through the qualifying sections well, and in the semifinal downed the triple led by Maria McMahon 97. In the final Breen’s trio dominated the six ends to lead 80. Robinson came back with a single on the seventh end and two shots on the next end to make it 83, before Breen won a vital two shots on the ninth end to secure victory.

The men’s triples could not be played out due to steady rain on Sunday.

Awamoa’s Craig McDonald and Phoenix’s Lennie Milner and Robbie Halcrow qualified, with McDonald meeting Milner on Thursday afternoon at the Phoenix club. The winner will then play Robbie Halcrow in the final.

Wet weather led to the cancellation of all club cricket in Oamaru on Saturday.

The first round of the zone four Hawke Cup elimination competition between North Otago and Otago Country (in Oamaru) and Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury (in Ashburton) was postponed because of ground conditions following heavy rain.

The round will now be played on the weekend of January 2627.
