Anderson’s Bay takes big lead in standings

ANDERSON’S Bay and St Clair claimed victories in the final round of the 2018 portion of the season with wins over Otago Boys High School and Balmacewen on Saturday.

Mat McCutcheon (Otago Boys’) got revenge from a recent loss over George Alexander (Anderson’s Bay) to win the top men’s singles match 63, 76.

Anderson’s Bay won the next two men’s singles as Junji Inojuchi overcame Zane Gray 63, 63 and Mr Reliable Mike Smith continued his unbeaten run in the competitio­n with a triumph over Henry Dickson 60, 62.

Leon Jiang (Otago Boys’) secured a split of the men’s singles by edging Anthony Mirfin (Anderson’s Bay) 63, 76.

The top women’s singles promised to be a great encounter and it delivered as Ayesha Horley (Anderson’s Bay) maintained her impressive form this season to outlast Mackenzie Phillips (Otago Boys’) in three tightlycon­tested sets 63, 36, 64. Annalise Wilson (Otago Boys’) defeated Angela Fitzgerald (Anderson’s Bay) 64, 64 to even the tie at 33 going into the doubles.

This is where Anderson’s Bay shone as it claimed a sweep of the doubles in straight sets to go into the Christmas break with a big lead in the standings.

St Clair won the first six matches of its tie against Balmacewen to move off the bottom of the ladder, with the final three matches yet to be played.

Rileigh Fields (St Clair) came out on top against Ilana Goosens (Balmacewen) 63, 61 while Ai Kasuga (St Clair) overcame Andrea King (Balmacewen) in two hardfought sets 64, 64.

Fields and Kasuga then won the doubles match agasinst Goosens and King 63, 62.

In the men’s singles Kevin Kyle (St Clair) defeated Fraser Richardson (Balmacewen) 6,2 60 and Tony Ryder (St Clair) won the battle of the veterans, as he defeated John Alexander (Balmacewen) 63, 62.

Ryder and Kyle won a close match in the doubles over Alexander and Richardson 57, 63, 108. The final three matches will be completed next week.
