Master plan project for recreation centres to get under way
A JOINT master plan project for Queenstown Events Centre and Wanaka Recreation Centre is set to begin.
Consultancy firm Boffa Miskell will lead the project and work with the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), local sports groups and others to consider the development of all current and potential sites for the next 20 years.
QLDC general manager community services Thunes Cloete said the master plan would draw on recent research and consultations around user demand for the facilities.
‘‘Connecting Queenstown Events Centre and Wanaka Recreation Centre with proposed new residen tial, commercial and education hubs, especially via the active travel links being explored in the Wanaka and Frankton master plans, is a particular focus.
‘‘Many clubs and groups have already shared their future plans with us during previous consultations, but this is a onceinageneration opportunity for others to have their say about how the future development of sport and recreation in the district can benefit them,’’ Dr Cloete said.
The joint master plan will add detail to the $12 million investment programme for Queenstown Events Centre outlined in the council’s longterm plan, which includes two additional indoor courts, a multiuse artificial turf and an upgrade of its gym and group fitness facilities.
