Library’s lending stock expands to cater for more active tastes

THE Naseby Athenaeum’s reading room will be home to an expanded collection of items to borrow this summer, thanks to the creative mind of a young reader.

Lochie Grant (7), of Dunedin, came up with the idea of a ‘‘Tribrary’’ which would add sports gear and DVDs to the books that could be borrowed from the library reading room.

Lochie’s father Craig Grant said their family had a crib in Naseby which they visited regularly.

His son thought being able to borrow not just books but also games, sports gear and DVDs would enable holidaymakers to make the most of the summer both indoors and outdoors.

‘‘People . . . might go up there and stay for a week, but not have all the stuff to entertain the kids.’’

People could ‘‘donate, borrow, bring back’’ a selection of items, Mr Grant said.

Naseby librarian Dawn Lowien said she ‘‘couldn’t believe’’ how many items were available. There were cricket bats, racquets, crossword puzzles — ‘‘too many things to mention’’.

It was the first time she had seen anything like this, but was very keen on the idea when Lochie suggested it.

With a recreation ground just across the road and many children who came for the holidays, it would be very popular, Mrs Lowien said.
