Relaxed atmosphere set against an idyllic backdrop

-

AN idyllic setting surrounded by picturesque Central Otago hills makes for a relaxing family day out at the races at Omakau.

On Thursday January 3, the Central Otago Racing Club hosts the Omakau Races gallops meeting, and with many holidaymakers attending, the day traditionally has a laidback atmosphere.

The gallops follow the trotting meeting held the previous day.

There are two major feature races on the programme, one for the prized Clare Memorial Gold Cup. Made of virtually pure gold, and worth around $40,000, the cup is considered the most valuable in New Zealand and Australian thoroughbred racing. Every year the winner has their name engraved on it and holds it briefly for a photograph to be taken, before being given a gift in its place.

The second, an open 1400m race, is the Omakau Cup, which will carry a stake of $25,000.

The day offers a chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy great racing action while the family is in a safe environment with free allday children’s entertainment.

There are ontrack events, with new and exciting activities for children under 12.

Everyone will enjoy delicious food and drink, with many food stalls operating, and have a chance to unwind while studying race form. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic or barbecue and take in the stunning surroundings.

And for the serious punters — get a team together and enter the punting competition. A great prize is up for grabs and the title of Central Otago Punter of the Year.

General admission is $10 for adults, and under18s are free. Gates open at 11am, and the first race is scheduled to start around midday.
