DUNEDIN will play host to nearly 900 aspiring athletes over the next three days.

The South Island Colgate Games begin at the Caledonian Ground today and run until Sunday.

In its 41st year, the event has attracted athletes aged 7 to 14 from throughout New Zealand and 63 clubs are represented.

A massive 3963 individual event entries have been received for the three days of competition.

‘‘It’s great to see the athletes trying their hand at a range of sports,’’ Colgate Games South Island chairman Bryce Watt said.

‘‘On average, each competitor is taking part in at least four events.

‘‘Long jump is the hot favourite for 2019, and we’re also seeing rising numbers of athletes trying out some of the traditionally less popular sports, like racewalking.’’

The event has been known as the Colgate Games since 1978.

In that time, thousands of young New Zealand athletes have competed at both the North and South Island events.

Medals are on offer in each event, although Colgate general manager John Garside said the Games were about celebrating and encouraging New Zealand’s up and coming athletes.

‘‘The Colgate Games are a chance for many young athletes to try their luck at new sports, meet new friends, and to have their first taste of competing on a national level.

‘‘As New Zealand’s longestrunning children’s athletics competition, the Colgate Games have a proud history of putting future Olympians on their course.’’

Four $700 scholarships — named after twotime Olympic medallist Nick Willis — are available for outstanding performers.

The Games are scheduled to start at 9.30am this morning and conclude at 4.30pm on Sunday.

Entry is free for adults and children 15 and under.

Adults gate fees are $18 for a threeday pass and $7 for singleday pass.

The North Island Games held last weekend attracted nearly 1400 competitors.
