Lake, land health must take priority in process

-

VEHICULAR access to all parts of the shores of Lake Dunstan is not a right, and is certainly not practical.

In recent times, vegetation has occasionally been cleared from the shoreline, and this has directly impacted the ability of birds to nest along the shores.

Why is vehicular access required? Surely it is to launch boats, and this is best done at designated locations where the gradient is smooth, and proper surfaces are in place.

To allow vehicular access at other locations will destroy the natural land surface, and likely cause erosion, apart from the environmental damage to nesting sites.

Location of proposed fencing appears to be carefully considered, and we should all take time to reflect on the overall health of our lake, and let a logical consultation process to be completed.

Supermarket bags

I WONDER if the supermarket owners are going to donate the money they have saved from eliminating plastic bags into public health surveillance.

That should cover nicely the increase in gastrointestinal illness management costs due to meat juice contamination of reusable bags and other food. Terry Taylor

Playground

SURELY the council must have thought it was April Fool’s Day when it announced its proposal for a playground at the harbour mouth along with the crazy idea of removing a bridge ramp. Unbelievable. I believe the ideas expressed by S. Kilroy (ODT 29.12.18) hold considerable merit and deserve investigation. Please councillors, get your feet back on the ground, and regain some common sense. L. Pronouns

AS a reader, I object to Christopher Horan presuming to tell Bruce Munro how to do his job (ODT, 5.1.19).

If an entity chooses the nominative ‘‘we’’, they are rendered as ‘‘them’’, out of respect for their humanity, despite statutory grammatical form.

What of the Royal ‘‘We’’? Do you remonstrate with QE2 for being plural? Alan Beck
