Musicians pay tribute to Parton at fundraiser concert
LOS ANGELES: Grammys 2019 performers Shawn Mendes and Miley Cyrus were two of the many artists who performed together at Saturday’s MusiCares Person of the Year concert, which honoured Cyrus’ godmother, Dolly Parton.
Cyrus also honoured Parton in the night’s final speech, saying Parton taught her to ‘‘never judge a book by its cover, or by its huge boobs and big hair’’.
‘‘I’ll never forget running into [Parton], my fairy godmother, backstage,’’ Cyrus recalled. ‘‘And she came up and took my hand and said, ‘Miley, how’d you grow up to be so . . .’ And I was waiting for her to say ‘wellrounded’, or ‘levelheaded’. And then she said, ‘flatchested’.’’
The event raised more than $US6 million ($NZ8.9 million) for MusiCares, the Recording Academy’s organisation that provides resources and counselling to musicians in need. — USA Today
