Campbell ready for racing

WINGATUI rider Corey Campbell showed he was ready to return to race riding at yesterday’s Wingatui jumpouts.

The apprentice has been out of the saddle for much of this year after fracturing his kneecap early last month.

Campbell initially aimed to be back riding at next week’s Wingatui meeting; however, his kneecap has healed well and he is ready to make an early comeback.

Campbell said he would return to racing at Saturday’s Southland Guineas meeting at Invercargill.

The 17yearold will take the ride on the inform Zabay for his employers Brian and Shane Anderton in the Summer Cup over 1600m.

Zabay has been in brilliant recent form and produced a second behind her stablemate, Taieri Gem, on Champions’ Day at Wingatui earlier this month.

Campbell was back in the winning groove when taking out the first heat at yesterday’s jumpouts.

Most of yesterday’s heats featured largely unknown gallopers who have yet to start their careers.

Little separated White Robe Lodge gallopers Londonderry Air and Heberite in the open heat.

Trainer Brian Anderton said White Robe Lodge WeightForAge winner Gallant Boy had enjoyed a week since his careerbest win on Champions’ Day.

Tommy Tucker, who was badly hampered when attempting to defend his race crown, was also given an easy time after the race.

Anderton said he expected Tommy Tucker to start at Wingatui early next month.
