Informal classics The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra is holding an informal concert at Hanover Hall in Dunedin on Sunday afternoon to kick off the year and fundraise for the orchestra. The programme will involve a wide variety of music for string, woodwind and brass chamber groups. The music will range from Gabrieli and Beethoven to Scott Joplin, with plenty more composers inbetween.

Geoparks wonder

Waitaki Whitestone Geopark Trust is bringing Prof Patrick McKeever to speak at the Oamaru Opera House on Tuesday. Prof McKeever, who was instrument­al in establishi­ng the first Global Geopark in 2000, will share his knowledge of geoparks, his impression­s of Waitaki’s, and what it means for the district.

Picnic on the lawn

The University of Otago’s is celebratin­g its 150th anniversar­y with a picnic on the clocktower lawn on Friday from 5.30pm7.30pm. With plenty of children’s entertainm­ent, live music and food trucks, the picnic — you can bring your own — is a chance for staff, students, family, friends, alumni and the community to come together to celebrate New Zealand’s first university.

Summer show

The Otago Arts Society is holding its summer arts show at the Dunedin Railway Station from Saturday. On display will be pottery, sculpture and eyepopping paintings.
