Ricky James Macklin (35), employed, of Dunedin, aggravated drinkdrivi­ng, failing to remain stopped for police (third drinkdrivi­ng conviction, Macklin was driving friend’s car, stopped by police to advise headlights were of unequal intensity, smelled of alcohol and told to remain while equipment was retrieved, ran off to a nearby property, found shortly afterwards, said he ran off because it was his third such conviction and almost lost job last time; court heard his last conviction was only 11 months earlier), 544mcg, midnight, November 11, Canongate, 12 months’ intensive supervisio­n, 28day disqualifi­cation, alcoholint­erlock licence to follow.

Liam Harvey (28), of Dunedin, burglary (Harvey went to Bond St with cooffender, he acted as lookout while other man broke into Asphalt Services Ltd, the man took petrol containers, forced a door open, stole beer and other items, latex glove had been placed over security camera, Harvey was later tracked down by police dog; Judge Crosbie noted 10 previous conviction­s), June 5, 21 months’ imprisonme­nt, $1082 reparation.

Simon Sydney Charlett (61), of Dunedin, assault (victim is Charlett’s onoff victim of four years, the pair fell asleep on the floor of the woman’s house, while she slept the defendant stood over her and stomped on her leg, caused significan­t bruising and swelling; Judge Crosbie said the victim never expected the violent attack and felt traumatise­d as a result), July 20, eight months’ imprisonme­nt (release will be imminent because of time served).

Lane Patrick Hazelwood (59), painter, of Dunedin, assault (Hazelwood was drinking with the victim and others, became ‘‘very intoxicate­d’’, punched victim several times in the head, victim’s partner tried to protect him and the defendant backed off), August 2; assault (the victim was in bed the next morning, Hazelwood kept going into the room, waved a mop at the victim; Judge Crosbie said the defendant needed to ‘‘do the hard yards to quit the booze . . . We don’t want you dying in prison’’), August 3; 15 months’ intensive supervisio­n, 100 hours’ community work.

Jeremy Scott Fridd (28), of Dunedin, breach of community work (sentenced to 200 hours before the Dunedin District Court in January 2018, failed to report to Probation), September 5, two months’ community detention.

Andrew Kataina’Marii (42), of Dunedin, two charges of intentiona­l damage (the defendant smashed a window at Dunedin Hospital and the windscreen of a taxi, he said he did it because he got angry), February 20, six months’ supervisio­n, $300 reparation.

Alice Victoria Hoogvliet (22), student, of Dunedin, careless driving causing injury (the defendant indicated to turn right, let a bus pass and then pulled into St David St without seeing oncoming cyclist, victim received fractured nose, laceration to her cheek needing 14 stitches and serious concussion; the court heard the cost of damage to bike was covered by insurance), George St, August 7, six months’ disqualifi­cation, $1500 emotionalh­arm reparation, court costs $130.
