Consistent stable has five runners with chance of winning

- JONNY TURNER

SOUTHLAND trainers Kirstin Barclay and Paul Ellis look set to be rewarded for consistency at Oamaru today.

Their five runners were all right in the the finish on the first day of the twoday Waikouaiti meeting on Sunday when running three seconds, a third and a fourth.

Barclay said she found it hard to pick which one of her team was the best placed to crack a win for her stable at today’s meeting.

‘‘They are all great chances and they are all really well. I couldn’t really choose one.

‘‘With a bit of luck any one of them could pop up and win.’’

Double Rainbow, who starts in race 1, caught the eye with a huge performance to run second in Sunday’s amateur drivers’ race.

After galloping at the start and losing valuable ground, the horse produced a big late finish.

Barclay hopes Double Rainbow’s starting woes were just a oneoff and that he can begin safely today for driver Graeme Anderson.

‘‘I think it was just a oneoff. Graeme said it was a bit rough on the outside of the track, but I am not exactly sure what happened. The horse normally flies the gate.

‘‘He still had the earplugs in at the line and he pulled up really well after the race. He does go super on the grass.’’

Moniburns, another second placegetter for Barclay and Ellis on Sunday, looks well placed as the highestrated runner in race 5.

The rating 49 trotter faces a field capped to trotters with a rating of 49 or under.

On Sunday she competed in a field of squaregaiters rated up to 55 points.

‘‘Moniburns is going really well and she is in a lowercapped field that what she has been in lately.’’

The third of Barclay and Ellis’ second placegetters on Sunday, Miss Fandago, is a leading chance in race 6.

‘‘She went super on Sunday.’’ Machjagger drops in class from taking on Airpark Flyer in Sunday’s Waikouaiti Cup.

However, the horse moves to a mobile event, which is a disadvantage for her, Barclay said.

The stable’s results on Sunday were so consistent that Changed My Mind’s fourth placing was Barlcay and Ellis’ worst result at the meeting.

She is well placed to crack her first win in race 3 today.

‘‘She has been racing pretty well. Ithe race before that she sat parked and ran fourth in a fast mile.

‘She dug in really well on Sunday and I was really happy with her.’’
