Exchange of thoughts on South Dunedin

A HUI held for the South Dunedin community last night attracted 110 people, who expressed their pride for the area and listened to ideas about the South Dunedin Library and Community Complex.

South Dunedin Community Network chairwoman Eleanor Doig said Dunedin City Council centre project manager Jane Anvil, and library services manager Bernie Hawke talked about some of the ideas the council had for the complex.

They included having a cafe, meeting and homework spaces, as well as youth spaces, and a ‘‘maker space’’ which might include tools such as a sewing machine or a 3D printer.

‘‘[They are] some of the ideas that might be [included] if the community wants them.’’

People who attended the meeting brainstormed their own ideas, which would be fed back to the council, Mrs Doig said.

The public meeting was held at the Blind Foundation rooms in Hillside Rd.

Some ideas from the public included bathrooms and showers, and a performance space of some kind. More information on the complex was expected from the council in coming weeks, Mrs Doig said.

‘‘We are waiting with bated breath to know where it’s going to be.’’

Also discussed at the hui were the effects of flooding and sea levels rising.
