Work on Molyneux Park pitch uncertain

UNCERTAINTY surrounds Molyneux Park’s pitch, with planned works to the cricket block yet to be approved.

The existing wicket at the Alexandra ground has come under heavy criticism from players and umpires following domestic cricket fixtures at the venue in December.

An update report was presented to the Central Otago District Council by parks and recreations manager Gordon Bailey at yesterday’s council meeting.

The report said discussions with New Zealand Cricket indicated Molyneux Park was not going to lose its first class cricket venue status, with an overhaul of the cricket block planned.

Plans to dig out the 45yearold block were to begin ‘‘as soon as practicable following the Highlander rugby match that occurred on 1 February 2019’’.

The work was yet to start. At the meeting, Bailey said the planned repairs could be pushed back a year if the timing of the revamp was not viable.

‘‘We’re talking with the rugby [administrators] at the moment.

‘‘If it doesn’t happen this season then it won’t happen until this time next year. The advice is spring weather isn’t conducive to getting a new wicket.’’

Bailey confirmed discussions with the Vincent Community Board around the funding and the scheduling of the work would occur today.

The report said the initial intention was to skim off 50 to 75mm of clay from the wicket block, install new clay and sow with grass.

A full rebuild of the wicket was the preferred solution following consultation, Bailey said.

At yesterday’s meeting, mayor Tim Cadogan queried how the rugby season would be affected if work went ahead during the current cricket season.

‘‘You won’t be able to build a new pitch if there’s a heap of rugby boots using the ground.’’

Club rugby begins on March 22, and a possible Ranfurly Shield challenge in Alexandra has been proposed for later in the year.
