OAMARU: A former Otematata man who rolled his van and injured his friend in the process has been sentenced in the Oamaru District Court.
Tarris Wilson Johnston May (23), of Timaru, had earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with excess blood alcohol causing injury and on Wednesday was sentenced to six months’ community detention, six months’ supervision, disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay an analyst’s fee of $112 and medical expenses of $142 by Judge Joanna Maze.
A police summary of facts said on October 30 last year, May and a group of friends enjoyed dinner at a house in Otematata Station Rd, where he consumed alcohol during and after his meal.
About 12.05am on October 31 he decided to go home and give a friend a ride.
While driving on the same road, a private gravel road that leads to Otematata Station, he lost control of his Toyota Hiace van, which slid sideways and hit a small bank before it rolled and came to rest on its side.
May’s friend suffered a broken wrist as a result of the accident.
The defendant was not injured.
May was initially unable to complete a breathalcohol test, but a blood sample showed a bloodalcohol level of 205mg per 100ml of blood.
Judge Maze accepted May was remorseful and acknowledged his early guilty plea.
He will serve his sentence at a Timaru address.
