Driver staggered by price of fuel in the South

-

HAVE you looked at the website Price Watch for the amount Dunedin is paying for 91 fuel?

Invercargill is $1.99, Dunedin is $2.15 and Auckland is $2.07 (but don’t forget this includes the tax which was recently put on, so in fact makes the price actually a lot lower).

What is going on here? Labour said they would look into it and as soon as that was mentioned the price started to drop. Now that is in the past and what is happening? The price has crept up.

The AA doesn’t appear to be concerned either except that every so often they mention that the motorist is paying to much in New Zealand yet nothing happens.

Is this why the electric cars are being ‘‘pushed’’ (pardon the pun)?

Let’s get real here and control the price of fuel from the top. Let’s have a serious inquiry on the price and give the motoring public a fair deal.

Tax report

THE proposed capital gains tax is expected to gather $8.3 billion of hitherto avoided tax in its first five years.

This means that investors, currently not paying, will retain more than

$17 billion in capital gains. Tears come to my eyes, but not for the investors, and particularly not for the conflicted commentators in the National cabinet.

Chris Trotter (ODT, 1.3.19) appears to have rolled to the right and joined the club. But I believe he has not rolled with the times. His concern is that Labour will lose the next election by promoting the tax, and does his best to ensure this by calling them idiots and twerps.

Look in the mirror, Chris — he has completely avoided any mention of fairness.

On another note, a couple of recent letter writers appear to be under the impression this is an annual tax. No, it applies only when the investment is sold. S. Moynihan
