Stuart St disruption nearing end
TRAFFIC disruption from the central Dunedin power cable upgrade on Stuart St is coming to an end.
Trench work is nearly complete and contractors are preparing to install 3km of new highvoltage underground cables which will power the city centre.
Aurora Energy asset management and planning general manager Glenn Coates said stage one of the project was nearing completion and contractors were expected to make their final turn into Smith St for the trench work on Monday.
Mr Coates said the corner of Stuart and Smith Sts was a major intersection and he appreciated road users’ patience with traffic management while the work was completed.
‘‘It’s anticipated that this work will take approximately one week to complete and our contractors will do their best to minimise disruption to road users, local businesses and residents.’’
He said Stuart St would be reduced to twolane straight traffic, while Smith St (nearest Otago Girls’ High School) would be left and right turn only.
Smith St (nearest the Kingsgate Hotel) would be straight and left turn only.
‘‘If possible, it’s advised that alternative routes via the likes of York Pl and Moray Pl are taken to ensure efficient traffic flow is maintained and to help reduce congestion near the work site.’’
To date, excellent progress had been made on the project, and it was estimated to be completed in July, he said.
