Taieri back banned for drug use

TAIERI outside back Glenn Beadle has been banned for two years after being caught up in the clenbuterol scandal.

Beadle was one of three players named in a release by New Zealand Rugby yesterday about hearings stemming from the purchase of clenbuterol on a website five years ago.

MedSafe ran an investigation into the operations of website NZ Clenbuterol in 2014 and 2015, and there have been multiple hearings in many sporting codes for drug violations stemming from the purchase of the drug.

Beadle, who has played for Taieri for the past few years, admitted purchasing 20ml of clenbuterol in July, 2014 and another 10ml in November, 2014.

He initially denied using the drug but changed that to admitting both possession and use at the hearing.

He was suspended from October 26 last year and given a twoyear ban.

But it was backdated 12 months because of the long delay before proceedings and Beadle’s prompt admission, meaning his twoyear suspension started on October 26, 2017.

WairarapaBush club player Carlos Rimene was suspended for the same period as Beadle after he admitted possessing a prohibited substance after an online purchase of clenbuterol, also in 2014.

Former North Harbour club player Curtis Rountree was alleged to have purchased clenbuterol through the NZ Clenbuterol website in 2015.

Rountree lives in Australia and did not take part in the proceedings against him.

The sanction for these violations was doubled at the start of 2015, and subsequently Rountree received a fouryear suspension for the two violations — possession and attempted use of a prohibited substance — which was backdated six months to start on 21 August, 2018 on account of the delays in proceedings.
