Oamaru District Court

-

AN Oamaru man who assaulted his partner before she started to fight back was sentenced at the Oamaru District Court yesterday.

Mathew John Schultz (45) had earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting a female.

He was convicted and sentenced to nine months’ supervision.

The court heard at an earlier appearance that Schultz and the victim had been in a relationship for three years and living together for 18 months.

About 12 months before the assault they entered a de facto relationship, sharing a property in Oamaru.

On the night of October 8, Schultz left for work while the victim remained at home, and they started arguing through text messages.

About 2.40am the victim went to sleep, and when Schultz arrived home, about 6am on October 9, he engaged in a verbal argument with the victim.

While the victim was lying in bed, Schultz, standing at the foot of the bed, struck her left foot before he demanded she get out of his bed.

He then punched her in the side of the head, grabbed the victim’s hair and attempted to pull her up.

The victim grabbed a 2kg weight that was in the bed and began to fight back, striking Schultz several times.

He released the victim and retreated, before he lunged at her, held her down and punched her in the side of the head for a second time.

Schultz also bit her on her right arm. He finally withdrew when another person at the property entered the room, before the victim packed her bags and left the address.

She sustained scratches to her neck, forearm and around her right ear, bruising to her forearm and wrist, and a cut lip.

The victim did not require medical treatment.

The couple have since reconciled.

A A man who claimed he needed eight Tasers to defend himself if anyone broke into his house should not have been stunned to find himself in the dock at the Oamaru District Court yesterday.

When police conducted a search warrant on an unrelated matter at the property of Ian Briggs (66), of Oamaru, a handheld Taser was discovered under the pillow of his bed before a second Taser, disguised as a torch, was found in the same room.

As the search continued, another six Tasers were found hidden in a cereal tin in a kitchen cupboard and four firing cartridges were found in a separate tin.

Police also discovered 308 cannabis seeds in a sealed plastic bag.

Police seized the items under the Search and Surveillance Act 2012 and, when questioned, Briggs said he imported the Tasers to use for self defence.

Briggs was convicted and discharged by Judge Joanna Maze.
