SENTENCES imposed by Judge Michael Turner in the Dunedin District Court yesterday were. —

A Wai Yin Wong (44), tiler, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, careless driving (Wong hit the back of a parked vehicle, smashing it into another vehicle, that vehicle then hit a lamppost, Wong was taken to hospital where a sample of his blood was assessed; defence counsel Val Farrow said her client had become homesick and was driving to the house he had recently bought where he hoped his Hong Kongbased family would join him, he had paid $2900 for the damage he caused), 209mg, December 13, Somerville St, fined $1200, $111 reparation, eight months’ disqualifi­cation.

A Robert Moran Chambers (23), student, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 1083mcg (random stop, said going to pick up a friend who had been knocked out in town), Stuart St, about 4am, February 9, fined $1000, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed 28 days, alcoholint­erlock and zeroalcoho­l licence provisions to follow. Counsel Steve Turner said defendant was rung by friends after drinking at home, panicked and drove; no previous conviction­s.

A Jeremy John Sime (29), concrete worker, of Dunedin, drinkdrivi­ng, 600mcg (random stop, said getting away from friends who were trying to attack him), Braemar St, about 1.40am, February 17, fined $600, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months.

A Taylor Dean Aitken (25), of Mosgiel, drinkdrivi­ng (stopped for random breath test, showed signs of recent alcohol intake, said he had two cans of bourbon and was going to pick up his phone, “I know I shouldn’t be driving,” he said), 517mcg, 1.50am, February 10, Kenmure Rd, fined $520, court costs $130, six months’ disqualifi­cation.

A Aaron Hayden Taylor (20), contractor, of Balclutha, two breaches of limited licence (driving contrary to the licence in Clutha Valley Rd, Balclutha, on November 21 and in Main Road, Clinton, on February 18), overall sentence 120 hours’ community work (cumulative on current term), eight months’ disqualifi­cation (from July 20 when current ban ends). Counsel Deborah Henderson said Taylor had written a letter of apology; a consequenc­e of the offending was he would lose his job.

A Tony Faron Smith (49), disqualifi­ed driving (drove on to Interislan­d ferry sailing for Picton, and from Picton terminal to a Picton camping ground), February 9, fined $400, court costs $130, disqualifi­ed six months (but remains under indefinite disqualifi­cation imposed March last year).

A Regan James Lester (28), breaching protection order (entered on to land occupied by protected person without the person’s consent), afternoon January 3, six months’ community detention (curfewed 7pm Fridays to 7am Mondays), community work cancelled, new 200hour term, six months’ supervisio­n, unpaid fines of $3788 replaced with 180 hours’ community work (cumulative on the 200 hours). Court heard Lester on home detention at the time for assaulting the victim, not to associate with the victim a condition of that sentence.

A Kaili Tawhara Nepe (38), storeman, of Karitane, breaching protection order (behaviour amounting to psychologi­cal abuse of victim), Mosgiel, February 2, 80 hours’ community work, existing supervisio­n cancelled, new sixmonth term (conditions including requiremen­t to undergo Stopping Violence programme). Court probation officer Jeremy Burdett said Nepe complying well with supervisio­n; public defender Sophia Thorburn said Nepe trying to learn to deal with things better in future; judge said aggravatin­g features included offending occurred at victim’s home, Nepe on sentence for earlier breach of the order at the time.

A Jamie William Morton (32), shearer, of Milton, dishonesty using bank card (on footpath in Union St, Milton, found bank card that did not belong to him, picked it up, went immediatel­y to supermarke­t and used it for ‘‘pay wave’’ purchase of $24.50 packet cigarettes, left shop and discarded bank card), about 8.30am, October 31, 60 hours’ community work, reparation $25.

A Rebecca Luana Marechal (37), single mother, of Dunedin, intentiona­l damage (argument with woman known to her, snatched woman’s phone and threw it on ground causing touch screen to break), about 7pm, October 21, 50 hours’ community work, reparation $100.
