A Joel Nicholas Wallace (32), of Dunedin, threatening to kill (went to a Work and Income in Dunedin, told by security he was not allowed to enter the building because of his past conduct, Wallace became angry and started swearing, said he would return and shoot up the place, when arrested defendant said the threats he had made were to hurt himself), November 27, seven months’ imprisonment.
A Douglas James Tangiia Tamatea (29), of Dunedin, disqualified driving (in explanation told police he and his partner had been arguing, he left the address to keep his son away from the situation), Melbourne St, about 9.40pm, January 6, 50 hours’ community work and, instead of further disqualifi cation, additional 40 hours (making total term 90 hours). Judge noted offence involved no driving fault, no alcohol.
A Stephen James Lucas (32), of Dunedin, unlawfully taking vehicle (former partner allowed him to use van to move his belongings from Christchurch to address in outskirts of the city, defendant failed to return van as arranged; judge accepted defendant’s unlawful possession of the van about two or three days), possessing 0.1gm methamphetamine, Invercargill, both offences early April last year, overall sentence nine months’ intensive supervision (with threemonthly judicial monitoring), 200 hours’ community work, reparation $2750; unpaid fines of $2390 replaced with 100 hours’ community work (making total term 300 hours).
A Quintin Joseph Matthews (34), shearer, of Lawrence, breaching community work (failed to report), January 12, sentence cancelled, new 40hour term (includes 25 hours outstanding on sentence cancelled).
A Tania Lee Vince (39), of Mosgiel, disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence (Vince in Murray St, Mosgiel, yelling abuse and obscenities, about 11.30pm, January 11; police called, warned her about her behaviour and possible consequences if she continued after they left; but she continued and, passing a thenneighbour’s address, yelled more abuse; subsequently arrested; being escorted from her property yelled that the victim better wait till she got home, she would be going over; victim was frightened, believing Vince was making physical threats towards her), 80 hours’ community work. Judge said an aggravating factor was Vince was on postdetention conditions at the time. A Riley Max Jorgensen (18), of Dunedin, attempted unlawful taking, theft, burgling enclosed yard (after drinking alcohol at Wray St address went for walk; got into unlocked vehicle in Statham St, put it into neutral, went about 50m down hill before stopping across a driveway; walked into McDonald St, took fire extinguisher from Hilux vehicle, used extinguisher to spray several vehicles in Travis St then left it behind; walked into Brockville park, climbed fence into rear of a Travis St property, took items from Honda vehicle, apprehended by police after climbing back over fence into the park), about 5.30am, December 18, 70 hours’ community work, six months’ supervision, reparation $60 (theft). Ms Thorburn said Jorgensen’s explanation was ‘‘drunk and being an idiot . . . very ashamed, it will not happen again’’; judge noted offending said to be out of character ‘‘supported by the fact not previously before the court’’.
