Tyler’s patience pays dividends

‘‘Patience is the cheapest thing in racing and the least used’’ is one of the mostquoted lines from the late master trainer who won the Melbourne Cup 12 times.
Patience was the key ingredient in 8yrold Lochan Ora returning to the winner’s circle. The horse broke a bone in his leg late last year.
‘‘He broke a cannon bone when he kicked the wall of his box,’’ his cotrainer Kelvin Tyler said, ‘‘so we put him out in the paddock and gave him a bit of time to heal.
‘‘You can’t underestimate giving them time.
Lochan Ora helped Tyler and his brother, Steve, to the South Otago Cup quinella.
Lochan Ora fought gamely in the straight under rider Kozzi Asano to hold off the finish of Just Push Play and Chris Johnson.
Two races later, Tyler was back in the winner’s circle when Hazelnut broke maiden ranks. The 5yrold unleashed a powerful finish for rider Kin Kwo to win by four and ahalf lengths.
Tyler said Hazelnut was a horse he had plenty of time for.
Yesterday’s meeting finished appropriately when trainers Brian and Shane Anderton won the race named in honour of their injured jumping star, Jackfrost. Raise You Five bounced back after a mediocre performance at Riccarton Park on Saturday to win a rating 65 race over 1600m.
Jackfrost is undergoing stem cell therapy treatment on the suspensory ligament he injured in Australia earlier this year.
Reports of the recently crowned champion New Zealand jumper making a comeback had been overstated, Brian Anderton said.
‘‘We are not even thinking about racing him next season. It could be the season after.
‘‘He won’t go anywhere unless he is fully sound.
‘‘We love the horse and we don’t want to see him hurt again.’’
There was another hometrack success when Johnson rated Always On Call perfectly to score by two lengths in rating 72 company for trainer Terry Kennedy.
Always On Call loves to lead and she showed that again when holding off all challengers in the straight.
Johnson produced another welljudged frontrunning ride aboard Hot Tap in the Pearl Series race for Isla Bank trainers Kerry and Ian Taplin. But another of their horses, Super Tap, had to be scratched from the race after the filly refused to enter the starting stalls.
Johnson also won in style on Pushyaluck. The jockey shot the 4yrold around the field with about 1100m left to run in a 1600m maiden race. The move paid off as the Steven Woodsfordtrained 4yrold rallied hard in the straight for victory.
