A CROMWELL man who threw a bottle at a man with such force it shattered on impact has received a mixed sentence.

Christophe­r Wayne Proctor (41), labourer, was convicted by Judge Emma Smith in the Alexandra District Court yesterday of injuring with intent to injure.

Proctor had thrown a Corona bottle at Gareth Chad Noble in Cromwell on March 1.

Mr Noble suffered laceration­s, a broken nose, headaches and concussion, and could not work for three weeks.

Counsel for Proctor, Justine Baird, said Proctor had been ‘‘highly intoxicate­d’’ at the time and did not remember the incident. But he was ‘‘extremely remorseful’’, and apologised the next day to Mr Noble.

Judge Smith said Mr Noble had shown ‘‘good grace’’ to Proctor and he did not want the incident to become a ‘‘defining moment’’ in Proctor’s life.

She sentenced Proctor to 12 months’ supervisio­n, three months’ community detention, 100 hours’ community work, $711 reparation, $400 emotional harm reparation and $130 court costs.

Other conviction­s

Jodi Marie Ball (42), of Alexandra, four charges of using a document (bank card) with intent to obtain property dishonestl­y and without claim of right (took the bank cards from vehicles and used them to buy goods and for online gambling), stole a bank card and money worth $10, and stole a bank card and money worth $5, Cromwell, July 15; 12 months’ intensive supervisio­n, $237.90 reparation.

Ranald James McHardy (41), behaved in a threatenin­g manner that was likely to cause violence against persons to start, Alexandra, April 24 (verbally abused and threatened a couple); 40 hours’ community work, court costs $130.
