Parklets already causing issues in George St
SO a bus ‘‘collided with a George St parklet’’ — one of the five parklets which cost the ratepayers $167,000 (ODT, 9.10.19).
We were led to believe that unused bus stop areas would be used for disability and fiveminute vehicle parks. However, it appears that DCC personnel went ahead with the installation of these obstructions before central business owners, new councillors and others had opportunities to voice their opposition to the multimilliondollar concept.
I trust that all likeminded central business owners, ratepayers and others will sign Brent Weatherall’s petition. This is urgent before unthinking DCC people, and others, forge ahead with more expensive, dangerous and downright stupid concepts for the Dunedin central business areas.
Also, how many people know that five expensive and unnecessary speed humps are being installed in Maori Rd? Many drivers use this as an alternative to SH1 and George/Princes Sts, which have become slow moving and dangerous.
We have been told that the speed humps are part of the school safety changes. This is ridiculous. Maori Rd goes through the Town Belt and is not in a residential area.

Climate change
REGARDING climate change and John Batt’s letter (14.10.19).
As with tobacco company executives before them, oil executives’ priority was to keep people burning their product.
Had governments followed the scientists — including the oil companies’ own scientists — ‘‘precocious, disrespectful teenagers’’ wouldn’t need to upset climate deniers with their demands for a planet suitable to live on. Dennis Horne
