Residents’ views sought on future Dunedin housing
DUNEDIN residents are being asked for their ideas on the future of housing in the city.
The Dunedin City Council is working on ways to encourage new housing as the city’s population continues to grow faster than expected.
As part of that work, the DCC is encouraging residents to have their say via a survey on the council website.
Council city development manager Anna Johnson said the survey, which is already live, would give the community a chance to share ideas on what sort of housing they would like to see and where.
That would include inviting people to indicate areas they felt should be rezoned for new houses, as well as where new apartments and townhouses could be built within urban areas.
The feedback would be added to that already sought from developers, surveyors, social housing providers and other parties, she said.
The input would be considered alongside government and second generation district plan (2GP) policies, including those covering outstanding natural landscapes and natural hazards, as well as the availability of services like water, wastewater, stormwater, roads and public transport, she said.
The survey closes on November 3, and ideas could
help shape changes to the 2GP or other council plans or strategies.
There would be another chance for the public to give feedback on housing options when a variation to the 2GP, which will aim to boost development capacity across the city, goes out for formal consultation next year, she added.
