Schedule to install LED lights disclosed
THE Dunedin City Council has revealed which suburbs will be first to get new LED street lights, starting in December this year.
The council announced yesterday morning that installation of the 3000k LEDs will be staged starting from the outer suburbs such as the Taieri and moving in towards the city centre.
The suburbs where lights will be installed starting in December this year are Taieri, Saddle Hill and Strath Taieri.
Next year, the council will move on to innercity suburbs.
The $15 million project to replace the highpressure sodium (HPS) lights will finish in mid2021, work in some innercity suburbs as well as Port Chalmers and Waikouaiti scheduled for that year.
Meanwhile, maintenance to replace faulty HPS lights is under way to ensure public safety on the city’s roads.
Acting group manager Nick Sargent said the new lights would include updated technology, which would help in monitoring their performance.
‘‘A wireless central management signalling system is included in the LED design to better measure electricity usage and receive regular updates on the performance of the LEDs to improve energy efficiency.’’
HPS lights were no longer being used as the components were in short supply.
The LED lights would improve public and road safety by providing better visibility for vehicles and pedestrians.
The LEDs being installed for the city were certified through the International DarkSky Association Fixture Seal of Approval in recognition of it being a dark skyfriendly product.
The project is a joint initiative between the council and the NZ Transport Agency, 85% of the funding coming from the NZTA.
