Cannabis dealers had $130,000

TWO men have admitted possession of cannabis for supply after a raid at a Queenstown backpackers last week, which uncovered more than $130,000 cash.

Sven Stephan Harrieder (30) and Justin Christopher Hamilton (25) were both arrested on June 25 after a search warrant was executed at Deco Backpackers.

Appearing by audiovisual link yesterday, Hamilton, through his lawyer, Joseph Mooney, admitted the single charge he faced — which carries with it a maximum sentence of eight years’ imprisonment — before Judge Russell Walker.

Harrieder also appeared by AV link.

Through his lawyer, Tanya Surrey, he admitted possession of cannabis for supply, possession of class Bcontrolled LSD and failing to assist Detective Matt Jones exercise a search power, all dated June 25.

Prosecuting Sergeant Ian Collin said the search warrant was executed in relation to the suspected supply of illicit drugs by the defendants and others.

In Harrieder’s room police found 2.18kg of cannabis, in various sized resealable bags, with a street value of between $25,000 and $54,000.

They also found $117,405.80 in New Zealand currency and $872.10 in United States and

Australian currencies.

In Hamilton’s room police found 92.64g of cannabis, with a street value of between $1158 and $2316, and $11,956.90 cash, all in New Zealand currency.

While Harrieder declined to comment, Hamilton told police the cannabis belonged to him, but declined to comment in relation to the cash.

Bail applications made by both men yesterday were refused.

Judge Walker remanded them in custody until sentencing on August 10.

Presentence reports, appendices were ordered.

Police would seek orders for the forfeiture of the cash and destruction of the drugs.
