Pirates notches good win over Baabaas

- JOHN LANGFORD

SOUTHLAND’S top six club teams are making sure the 2020 premier competition is an entertaining one.

After beating top dog Woodlands during the week, the Eastern Northern Barbarians were brought back to earth in their round four match on Saturday by Pirates Old Boys.

Pirates Old Boys beat the Barbarians 3914 at the Gore Showgrounds.

Hawks cocoach Ben McHugh said it was a good win.

“We’re building quite nice. We’ve got some good battlers in the forwards and a bloody good backline. We are defending really well this season, and we were able to shut them down.”

The Hawks had three punters carving off 60m which demoralised the Barbarians.

First fiveeighth Greg Dyer and leftfooted midfielder Jaye Thompson were equally effective when running the ball which kept the Baabaas guessing.

Hooker Josh Harwood was man of the match and fellow youngster Josh Wilcox excelled in the loose alongside No 8 Hayden Hagerty.

The Hawks were the fitter team and had the luxury of rotating their players that had been bruised in the midweek game.

The Hawks have benefited from having fitness trainer Jason

Price with them this season. Before the pandemic, Price was in Japan, working with Steve Hansen’s Toyota team.

The Barbarians could not muster the same intensity they had brought to their win during the week. Utility forward Brenton Howden was the Barbarians goto man on Saturday and outside backs Jordan Stuart and Rory van Vugt also played well.

Marist beat Blues 4126 at Miller St.

Marist led 249 at halftime and was first to score after the break. Marist stretched the margin to 4116 before Blues scored two tries in the last 15 minutes.

Woodlands had a comfortable 345 home win over Star.

Woodlands led 245 at halftime. Star was without loose forward Jordan Stewart this week.

Midlands is leading the Ack Soper Shield division one competition after earning an important 2417 victory over Edendale in Winton.

Midlands led 127 at half time but Edendale regained the lead midway through the second half before Midlands scored 12 points in the final 15 minutes.

Riversdale upset Wyndham 2413 after leading 1913 at half time, while Te Anau beat Waikaka 2010 in Te Anau.

In the division two, Gerald Dermody Shield Mossburn beat fellow title contender Tokanui 179 to sit on top of the table, ahead of Pioneer.
