Life sentence, no parole best punishment

-

I WAS sad to read the frontpage article (ODT, 4.7.20) ‘‘return of capital punishment’’ about the father who would like us to reinstate the death penalty here in New Zealand.

I understand his pain, as I also lost a son in his prime to a killer. But to become killers ourselves would only show the Mosque killer that we are in agreement with his thinking — that the killing of our enemies is the correct thing to do. Probably he felt that he was killing his enemies, so if we kill our enemies, are we any better than he is?

To give him a life sentence without possibility of parole would allow him to think about what he did for the rest of his life. Perhaps that would be the harshest punishment of all.

REGARDING the call for the death penalty (ODT, 4.7.20): Capital punishment of the Mosque shooting terrorist would make him a martyr and he would continue to be revered by those who applaud his actions.

Send him back to Australia to serve his sentence and let him be forgotten. Perhaps the time in prison may even bring him to reflect on and regret his actions.

WE enjoy reading the Mix each week, a very interesting supplement. This week (ODT, 4.7.20) we have been stumped with where the township on the front page is.

Maybe Outram but some views are puzzling us. It would be of interest if that information was printed somewhere though the pages. Keep up the interesting paper.
