Norwich relegated after Antonio’s fourgoal salvo

-

LONDON: Norwich City was consigned to relegation from the English Premier League after a resounding 40 defeat by West Ham United yesterday as Michail Antonio scored all the goals for the visiting side in a virtuoso performance at Carrow Road.

The result leaves Norwich, relegated from the Premier League for a record fifth time, bottom on 21 points — 13 adrift of 17thplaced Watford which beat Newcastle United 21. There are still three rounds of fixtures to play.

‘‘I’m really disappointed for this and for all our supporters,’’ Norwich manager Daniel Farke said. ‘‘We wanted to beat the odds again but when the dust settles the outcome is more or less what was expected.’’

West Ham, which is 16th, moved six points clear of the relegation zone and is above Watford on goal difference.

David McGoldrick scored twice for Sheffield United as it upset Chelsea with a 30 win at Bramall Lane.

Chelsea’s grip on a topfour place and Champions League qualification was weakened badly by the result and it could fall to fifth if Leicester City beat Bournemouth this morning and Manchester United overcomes Southampton tomorrow.

A fourth straight home win in the league for Chris Wilder’s side boosted its hopes of a first appearance in the Europa League as it moved to sixth on 54 points.

Liverpool’s 100% Premier League home record ended as the champion was held to a 11 draw by Burnley at Anfield.

Jay Rodriguez equalised for Burnley in the 69th minute after Andy Robertson had given Liverpool a firsthalf lead.

Liverpool, on 93 points, must win its last three games if it is o beat Manchester City’s record total of 100 points from two years ago. Burnley is ninth on 50 points.

The last time Liverpool failed to win at Anfield in the league was in January, 2019, when it drew 11 with Leicester City.

Raheem Sterling struck a hattrick as Manchester City crushed Brighton 50 at the AmEx Stadium,

Secondplaced City had lost its previous three away games but never looked likely to extend that streak against a Brighton side that struggled from the outset.

Watford striker Troy Deeney eased his side’s relegation fears with two secondhalf penalties as it beat Newcastle United 21 for its second straight Premier League victory.

Deeney blasted his spot kicks straight down the middle in the 52nd and 82nd minutes to give the home side a win which leaves it 17th on 34 points with three games to play, six ahead of thirdbottom Bournemouth which has a game in hand.

Dwight Gayle had put midtable Newcastle in front after 23 minutes when he steered the ball home after a superb glancing header from a corner by visiting defender Federico Fernandez which looked to be heading in at the far post. — Reuters
