Merton war memorial unveiled
Some time ago the residents of Merton decided to erect a memorial to the memory of the soldiers of this district who had fallen in the Great War. For this purpose the district was canvassed for funds, with the result that a handsome obelisk has been erected in the local cemetery. Last Tuesday afternoon, in the presence of a good gathering of people, the unveiling ceremony was performed by Sister Dodds, a nurse with the NZEF, and now matron of the Woodside Hospital.
The Last Post was sounded by Mr Logie, of Waitati. Several gentlemen took part in the ceremony, including the Revs Jamieson and King, Dr Harrison and Mr Logie. A number of appropriate speeches were made, after which the singing of the National Anthem brought a very impressive function to a close.
