Kyrgyzstan opposition in control
BISHKEK: Kyrgyzstan's central election commission has annulled the results of the October 4 parliamentary election which handed victory to two establishment parties, local news website 24.gk reported yesterday, citing a commission member.
Thousands of people protesting against election results stormed government buildings yesterday and opposition groups said they had seized power from President Sooronbai Jeenbekov in the strategically important Central Asian country.
Jeenbekov earlier said the country, which hosts a Russian air base and a large Canadiancontrolled gold mine, was facing an attempted coup d’etat, but ordered security forces not to open fire on protesters.
One person was killed and 590 wounded in unrest on Monday night, the Government said.
The opposition said it had freed Almazbek Atambayev, a former president jailed on corruption charges, and was already discussing the lineup of a provisional government. — Reuters
