Queenstown Pink Ribbon walkers go ahead despite official cancellation

Fourteen people — and two dogs — took matters into their own hands in Queenstown yesterday morning, taking part in the Pink Ribbon Walk even after the Breast Cancer Foundation cancelled the event.

Resort resident Carly Henderson (centre, front) had planned to complete the annual event for and with her mother and sister, both breast cancer survivors.

However, last week those who had purchased tickets were informed by the national charity the walk around the Queenstown Gardens had been cancelled due to a lack of ticket sales. Instead it offered to honour tickets at this weekend’s event in Christchurch on Saturday.

However, Ms Henderson decided to carry on with the walk in Queenstown to support the cause and put a call out on social media to invite others to join her.

While many said they would attend, rain in the resort probably dampened some of the enthusiasm, while others embraced the pink theme and the damp morning.

Participants included Jo Cleaver, of Riverton, who said she had already booked accommodation in Queenstown for the event so decided to make the most of that instead of driving seven hours to Christchurch.
