Party closes season

WANAKA

CONDITIONS were warm and murky at the Cardrona Alpine Resort for the last day of its 40th ski season on Saturday.

That did not bother scores of skiers and staff associated with the resort over the years, who were there for an apres ski party in 1980sstyle dress — some authentic heirlooms and some straight from the op shop.

Among the guests were John and Mary Lee, who owned, walked and skied the mountain before there were any buildings, lifts and groomers.

Mrs Lee said she could remember walking up the mountain in the snow, Mr Lee kindly carrying her skis.

The Lees founded the skifield and on Saturday expressed their delight at how it had developed.

General manager Bridget Legnavsky, who was still at school when Cardrona opened, said despite the restrictions required because of Covid19, the business had broken even, thanks to the Government’s wage subsidy. ‘‘We had a good season. ‘‘We did what we had to do to make it work.

‘‘Keeping the money OK is part of the sustainability of a ski resort.’’

Ms Legnavsky said she was a little regretful the season had come to an end.

However, preparations were already under way for a summer season of activities on the mountain.
