WHOSE VALUES? The results of the election are in with each voter having chosen the party whose values best match their own. The problem is that values are subject to fashion as are clothing and hairstyles. Certainly, the values held by generations past were quite different to those considered acceptable by the majority today. Each political party also holds to different priorities and ethics. So whose values are correct? Can one person’s values be deemed less acceptable than those of another? If we believe our race evolved by blind chance, the only sensible values to uphold must promote survival of the fittest. Asserting that the poor and less fortunate should be cared for and supported makes no sense under that world view. Who can claim moral right and wrong if there is no set standard to measure by? If the human race was created by a supreme being, the picture is entirely different. The Bible lays out God’s values and makes no allowance for any alternatives. He is termed the “rock of our salvation” in reference to the fact that his values are unchanging (Ps. 95:1). We are told that mercy, kindness, forgiveness, honesty, righteousness and love are the values he asks us to uphold. He is clear that our salvation depends on it (see Matt.5:1-12).
