Prison for killing

Auckland: A man who killed his 17monthold stepson has been jailed for nearly six years.

Phillip John Welsh, who was angry he was being used as a babysitter, threw Malcolm Bell against the frame of a sofa in June.

The baby boy was rushed to Starship Hospital but died of his injuries a week later.

Welsh pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the High Court at Auckland on the eve of his trial last month.

At his sentencing yesterday, the baby’s mother — Savanna Bell — told the 52yearold his denial of any wrongdoing for 15 months was unforgiveable.

Justice Whata jailed Welsh for five years and 11 months — of which he will have to serve at least half. — RNZ
