Railway extension on estimates
The report of the Roxburgh Railway League, which we published yesterday, is striking testimony of the fact that districts outside of Auckland, which gained 12/6d in the pound of the railway
estimates, also labour under very severe handicaps. The 28 miles which separate Roxburgh from the railhead is a serious obstacle to the full development of the fruitgrowing industry, and though it was suggested that the hardship entailed by the settlers was of small concern to the press and public of Otago, we hasten to assure the settlers that such is not the case. It is one of the lines which should be proceeded with, and our readers will learn with pleasure that the BeaumontMiller’s Flat section is likely to be pushed ahead. That is certainly as it should be, and the vote of £8000 could safely be overexpended.
