Reports of third peacock on the loose

OAMARU

JUST when they thought they had caught them all, it appears another could be on the loose.

The second rogue peacock meandering in Oamaru was apprehended on Tuesday, after its partner in crime was captured last Thursday.

However, Waitaki District Council regulatory services officer Kyle ThompsonConnell believed a third peacock was on the loose, and staff would be ‘‘keeping an eye out’’.

‘‘The third peacock is proving very elusive and there have been no confirmed sightings.’’

It was peacock breeding season, which could be a contributing factor, but there were no known peahens in the Oamaru area.

The second peacock was caught by a Blue Stone Dr resident on their property and was being kept in a chicken coop there for the time being.

Staff did not relocate it to the Oamaru Public Gardens, as was the case with the first peacock, to avoid the two peacocks fighting.

There were several offers from the community to rehome the peacocks, as the owner was yet to come forward.

‘‘Oamaru Bird Rescue and myself are in the process of assessing the suitability of these offers for this lovesick peacock.’’

The latest incident comes four years after an eightmonth saga of chasing George, a peacock who ran wild in South Hill.
