Aim to raise $10,000 to aid Ohau residents

- JOHN LEWIS john.lewis@odt.co.nz

AS Christmas comes into view, those burnt out of their Ohau homes last month will be starting to discover the little things that insurance will not cover.

Things such as Christmas presents, clothes, even food.

So Dunedin entertainer Kelvin Cummings has organised a benefit concert at the Mayfair Theatre next Friday, with the aim of raising more than $10,000 for the fire victims.

‘‘Insurance is able to cover the basics of being able to rebuild buildings and things, but there’s a lot of things it doesn’t cover,’’ he said.

‘‘So in the buildup to Christmas, if we raise enough money, it will mean they will be able to buy simple things like some presents, food, some clothing — anything that the people up there in Ohau are needing, which isn’t being covered by insurance.’’

Mr Cummings said concertgoers could expect a variety of entertainment, including hits from ‘‘The Highlights’’ production put on earlier this year by Musical Theatre Dunedin, Taieri Musical and Doug Kamo Creative Management.

There would also be a couple of country music artists playing kiwiana music. Top New Zealand comedian Simon McKinney would be the compere for the night as well as providing a few standup comedy routines.

‘‘It will be quite diverse, but all the acts will really complement each other.’’

There would also be auctions on the night to help raise money, he said.

‘‘All the entertainers, all the sound and lighting crew, the Mayfair Theatre Trust — everybody has donated 100% of everything, so it means every dollar that is put towards this event will be going straight to the people affected by the fire up there.’’
