Wall St causeway
I AM not sure that ‘‘causeway’’ is the correct term to describe the manuka sticks found in the Wall St Mall.
A causeway is a raised structure to allow water to flow underneath.
A more appropriate term is ‘‘corduroy’’. It is a relatively common technique used when road building in soft or boggy ground.
Saplings or sawmill offcuts are closely placed across the path or road and gravel laid on top. The corduroy spreads the load and stops the gravel sinking into the mud, which seems to be the case here.
