Dunedin council has plenty of really pressing issues to address

-

I DO understand where Lee Vandervis is coming from regarding raising the debt level of the Dunedin City

Council, but as a South Dunedin resident and business owner, there is a massive amount of work to do.

In fact, it seems more than a little petulant to be continually stamping your foot and raising your voice against the majority.

The lack of community housing, the appalling standard of student housing, and the drainage and water problems are massive.

You can fix anything for free and given that money has never been cheaper to borrow, the best advice would be to borrow big and commit to a proper drainage plan.

The rapidly escalating house prices in Dunedin are case in point of the lack of availability.

And I dare not mention the hospital, which is going to cause bun fights for decades.

Whoever decided that smack in the centre of town was a good place for patients to recover when the more practical solution is mere minutes away at Wakari? Bonkers.

Cannabis referendum

I’M thankful for the Dunedin electorate and its ability to see sensible drug law reform.

The Dunedin electorate was one of a handful that overwhelmingly supported change to cannabis laws — being my home electorate, I’m full of pride in my fellow citizens.

Although not achieving the success we were looking for, 48% of the population supporting reform is not something that can be dismissed.

Although the No vote was successful in muddying the conversation, Dunedin has seen clear through the propaganda.

As the referendum result did nothing to address issues around cannabis use, expect to see those who have come forward in their workplaces and openly talked positively about cannabis continue to do so.

Now that the conversation has been so publicly aired, there is no way to put it back into the box.

#MakeItLegal, Dunedin.

US election

GRANTED, Trump supporters are upset by recent events.

However, I cavil at ODT online comments that the US vicepresidential appointment is about ‘‘skin colour and genitalia’’.

Such appalling anons, preoccupied with pigment and private parts, must be posting from out of town.

If not, they should take the next stage leaving it.
